By Air to Benbecula Airport

Flybe have the route from Glasgow to Benbecula, the nearby airport. Loganair act as the carrier on this route.

There is at least 1 return flight a day and often 2.

There is, however, no published timetable and visitors are urged to carefully check times on the internet at www.flybe.co.uk.

Early bookings are usually significantly cheaper than late booking.

Note also that in common with many other airlines Flybe charge extra for carrying fishing rods, guns and golf clubs.

There is an information desk at Benbecula airport on 01870 602 310

There are excellent connections to Glasgow from most of the Southern UK airports, and it is entirely possible to get up early in the centre of London and be on the Loch in the afternoon. With the exception of Sundays.

Highland Airways also offer regular service linking Stornoway and Inverness with Benbecula – this could be useful for some visitors

By Ferry

A range of ferry services are available from Caledonian MacBrayne.

From Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy on North Uist; and to Tarbert on Harris.

From Oban or Mallaig, both on the mainland to Castlebay on Barra, and Lochboisdale on South Uist.

From Ullapool to Stornaway on Lewis.

Choice of ferry will depend on your starting point, and how far you wish to drive. Ferry journeys are of very different length, and of very different comfort, rather depending on the weather.

If travelling by car in the summer, it is essential to book well in advance from:
Caledonian MacBrayne, Head office, The Ferry Terminal, Gourock, Scotland PA19 1QP

Telephone: 01475 650 100
Web site: www.calmac.co.uk

Once you have landed

Kinloch is situated roughly half way up or down South Uist depending on your direction.

I am just 2 minutes from the main A865 road; on the B890
The road is signposted to Loch Sgiopoirt (in English Loch Skipport) this is on the East side of the main road.

OS grid reference 774397

By car or bus about 25 minutes from Benbecula airport (15 miles) 45 minutes from Lochmaddy ferry (25 miles) and about 30 minutes from Lochboisdale ferry (18 miles).

Note there is only one main road on South Uist that runs roughly North / South.

Car hire.

A car is essential in order to able to travel between the lochs.

You can either bring your own car on the ferry, or a range of vehicles can be hired from the following car hire companies.

Alternatively I have a 4 x 4 which we can use to “ferry you around the island” as required.

Let’s discuss the options.

Laing Motors at Lochboisdale on South Uist:
Telephone: 01878 700 267

Ask Car hire at Balivanich on Benbecula.
Telephone: 01870 602 818

All will arrange to deliver the car to you on arrival at Benbecula airport, or I will collect you if we are using my car.
